Leaders Demonstrate Life Saving Programs

Have you ever sat in a room of your peers and wonder “Why didn’t I think of that” or  ”how did they have time to get it done?” That ahh ha moment came multiple teams this weekend as I participated in the Models in Fire Prevention Symposium put on by the great folks associated with Vision 20/20.

The three day program highlighted programs from across the United States that are part of a community risk reduction strategy.  Some of the presenters where some of the most talented folks in our business.  Highlights included:

  • The art and science of developing a prevention culture by Chief Zikmund
  • People with profound hearing loss, partnering in community risk reduction
  • ITM, regulating and managing qualifications of contractors and their employees

Vision 20/20

Project brings together the nation’s fire safety organizations to develop strategies to reduce the loss of life and injury from fire

April 9, 2010 The Institution of Fire Engineers was awarded a $786,000 grant by the Department of Homeland Security Fire Prevention and Safety grant program to continue the work of the landmark Vision 20/20 project (www.strategicfire.org). Vision 20/20 has played a central role since its inception in 2007 in bringing together the nation’s fire safety organizations to develop common strategies for reducing the loss of life and injury from fire.

There are five strategies that have been collaboratively developed, including:

  • Increase advocacy for fire prevention
  • Conduct a national safety education/social marketing campaign
  • Raise the importance of fire prevention within the fire service

REFINE AND IMPROVE THE APPLICATION OF CODES AND STANDARDS THAT ENHANCE PUBLIC AND FIREFIGHTER SAFETY AND PRESERVE COMMUNITY ASSETS

Friday October 23 – 5 PM to 6:30 PM Convention Center Room 307 – This meeting will precede the meeting requested by the Fire Code Council

Thursday November 8 PM to 9:30 PM Convention Center Room 308 – This meeting will immediately follow the conclusion of the IBC-Fire Safety code development hearings

Vision 20/20 Overview

The Institution of Fire Engineers US Branch was awarded a Fire Prevention and Safety Grant by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to develop a comprehensive national strategy for fire prevention. This is a project with the goal of helping to bring together fire prevention efforts and focus everyone’s efforts collectively to effectively address the fire problem in the United States.

It’s Fire Prevention Week

Just in case you did not know its fire prevention week, which officially runs through this Sunday.  FPW has been celebrated around the states through increased fire prevention efforts, open houses, and even proclamations.

Vision 20/20 Report Released

The culminations on many months of work since the Vision 20/20 summit has been summarized in the final report.  Vision 20/20 has identified five strategic areas where we must focus to help reduced fire deaths, injuries, and damage.  The full report will be the catalyst for future grant activities included focus groups to work on one of the initiatives
