Conference to Kick of this Week (June 7-10, 2010)

Las Vegas plays host to this years National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) conference and exposition.  The program includes 100 educational conferences and nearly 300 exhibitors.

The conference has multiple pre-confernece seminars and officially kicks off at 1:00 pm on June 7, 2010.  The conference typically brings together architects, engineers, fire inspectors, industry, and other interested parties in fire and life safety.

International Code Council Final Action Hearings

Final Action Hearings to Conclude this Week

The International Code Council is currently 1/2 way thru the final action hearings in Dallas Texas.  The final action hearings for the A group of code changes began Sunday May 16, 2010 and will conclude this Sunday.  These code changes are various items that recieved public comment after the Code Development process last fall in Baltimore.  The final changes will make up the 2012 editions of the ICC code group.

The hearings have heard changes on the International Building Code, International Mechanical Code, and International Plumbing Code.  It is expected that the hearings will begin this afternoon on the International Fire Code and the Residential Code should begin on [click to continue…]

May is Building Safety Month!

Okay so its part way thru the month, and we thought its time for a quick reminder that its Building Safety Month.  For the first time Building Safety Week has been expanded into Building Safety Month.  BSM is growing in popularity which highlights the importance of building and designing safe, sustainable and green structures in the United States and worldwide.

Take a look at this great video which highlights some of the reasons behind BSM.

So there have been many great things done by Building and Safety Departments or Fire Departments.  These have included open houses, sprinkler demonstrations, contractor training, or commercials on public TV.  Take a look at the resources below and let us know what you are doing to help make the public aware!

International Code Council Update

New Green Construction Code Unveiled. The International Code Council announced the release of Public Version 1.0 of the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) to regulate construction of new and existing commercial buildings. The IGCC aims to significantly reduce energy usage and greenhouse gasses. It addresses site development and land use, including preservation of natural and material resources. The Code Council and original IGCC Cooperating Sponsors—American Institute of Architects (AIA) and ASTM International—have been joined by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Illuminating Engineers Society (IES) in a first-of-its-kind collaboration to boost critical green building practices across the country. May is Building Safety Month

For the first time, the International Code Council (ICC) and International Code Council Foundation (ICCF) has expanded Building Safety Week into a month-long Building Safety Month campaign to expand opportunities and increase awareness about the critical importance of building and designing safe, sustainable and green structures in the United States and worldwide.

Code Development – Final Action Hearings (May 15-23 at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel)

Vision 20/20

Project brings together the nation’s fire safety organizations to develop strategies to reduce the loss of life and injury from fire

April 9, 2010 The Institution of Fire Engineers was awarded a $786,000 grant by the Department of Homeland Security Fire Prevention and Safety grant program to continue the work of the landmark Vision 20/20 project (www.strategicfire.org). Vision 20/20 has played a central role since its inception in 2007 in bringing together the nation’s fire safety organizations to develop common strategies for reducing the loss of life and injury from fire.

There are five strategies that have been collaboratively developed, including:

  • Increase advocacy for fire prevention
  • Conduct a national safety education/social marketing campaign
  • Raise the importance of fire prevention within the fire service

ICC’s New Green Building Code

Public Comments Needed Before May 15, 2010

The International Code Council announced the release of Public Version 1.0 of the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) which is now open for public comment (ending May 15, 2010).

The initial document (According to the ICC):

  • Will use the “model” code approach
  • Minimum and advanced levels of performance (Green and high-performance buildings)
  • Will work as an overlay to the ICC Family of Codes
  • Written in mandatory language that provides a new regulatory framework
  • Will provide performance and prescriptive solutions
  • Will account for local conditions
  • Reflect the AIA 2030 Challenge
  • Work in tandem with leading Green rating systems
  • Designed with local, state & federal law in mind

New Chapter Benefits for 2010

For 2010, the Chapter Training Benefit will consist of one day of training at 50% off the listed price for courses and workbooks. Chapters of the International Code Council are entitled to a variety of complimentary and reduced rate benefits. To be eligible for benefits, your chapter must meet the requirements of CP #10-04 and have a current annual report on file.

Fake Fire Inspector Hits Maryland, DC, and Virginia

Uses cover to Steal from Businesses (With Video)

The surveillance video is clear and in color. Police say it’s of a crook claiming to be a fire or building inspector who gets open access inside businesses.  (See Video on Right)

Police are hoping to quickly close this case that has turned at least 6 businesses in the region into victims.

This case is troubling to authorities because they say the imposter is so convincing.   He’s seen carrying a flashlight and a belt pouch as if he belongs there and it’s all caught on tape.

The alleged imposter is seen wearing a blue polo shirt and talking to store owner Sophad Or.  9NEWS NOW caught up with the store owner of One Plus Convenience off Norfolk Ave. in Bethesda.
