The Department of Homeland Security has posted the FY2009 Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grants Program Guidance on the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) Program Website. The application period is scheduled to begin on September 21, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). Applications for these grants must be received by October 23, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Bleacher Collapse at Youth Circus
As the crowd rose to their feet to applaud the performers, the bleacher section did a wave and collapsed, sending nearly 450 people to the ground. The temporary bleacher was part of the Youth Circus. According to reports about 9 people were sent to the hospital.

One Exit, Hampered Escape of Occupants
Pictures show how devastating this fire was, with nothing but a burned out area littered with shoes and support poles. On Saturday night, August 16, 2009 a wedding was taking place in the tribal town of Al-Jahra outside of Kuwait City, which quickly turned deadly. The fire has claimed the lives of 43 people and nearly 90 have been injured. The cause of this fire is under investigation, although news reports are indicating the ex-wife of the groom may have intentionally started the fire.

Winds and Fire Cause Damage
Its being touted as a tale of two buildings. A recent fire in the original portion of Arnold’s furniture store destroyed the space while the recent addition is still standing. The addition to Arnolds furniture store was constructed in accordance with a current building code and provided with a fire wall to separate the new addition from the existing building. The site demonstrated the power of an automatic sprinkler system when installed with other protective measures.
The local media has indicated the original building is a total loss, while the new addition is slightly damaged although mostly intact. Read the full story on how building and fire codes work! See the AP video on the left of the page.

This idea is based on the tragic loss of 9 Charleston firefighters. Building Inspectors, Fire Marshal’s Firefighters and all in code enforcement can help save lives and honor the lives that were lost.
On June 18, the City of Charleston, South Carolina along with the Firefighters all of the United States, Canada and the World, will observe the 2 year Anniversary of the Super Sofa fire that took the lives of 9 Charleston firefighters. As you well know, these Firefighters died in the Line of Duty while battling a fast moving fire in a furniture store.

Stay Smart Don’t Get Burned
Fire Prevention Week 2009 focuses on burn awareness and prevention, as well as keeping homes safe from the leading causes of home fires.
Testing the water before putting a child in the bath may sound like common sense. Wearing short or close-fitting sleeves when cooking on the stovetop may show foresight. This and other simple actions may be all it takes to prevent devastating burns.
