International Code Council Looking for Nominations

Here’s the deal there are many unsung heros that fall under the area of Inspectors.  So why not make sure they are nominated and honored.

Nominations are now being accepted for the ICC Awards to be presented at the 2010 ICC Annual Conference, scheduled for October 25–28 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

ICC Awards will be presented in several categories to honor individuals and organizations for their accomplishments and service to ICC and the building safety industry.

The deadline to submit nominations for this year’s ICC Awards is Tuesday, June 15, 2010. Awards must be received by close of business of the deadline date. Completed forms may be mailed or faxed, or the information may be submitted by email.

Deadly Fire In Perm Kills 109

Lame Horse Nightclub Fire proves deadly

A deadly fire in the City of Perm in the Urals appears to have been sparked by fireworks which landed on a highly combustible ceiling.  The fire’s early stages are caught on camera and prove to be graphic and an all too familiar sight to the Station Night club Fire.

According to the AP

Shocked residents of the Urals city of Perm laid carnations Sunday at the snowy scene of a cordoned-off nightclub where officials say at least 112 people died in a fire.

And the Vote Is (UPDATED)

ICC Hearings have big votes with over 1800 voters

Building and Fire Safety professionals from across the United States participated in the Code Development hearings in Baltimore. Today was a busy day with various code proposals found in the International Residential Code (IRC).  These included revisions on stairways, general provisions, fire sprinkler provisions and many more.

Some of the more anticipated votes included

  • RB53, would have changed the sprinkler provisions that affect Townshouses was removed by the proponent.
  • RB54, added language to make sprinklers an option.  The committee voted in favor of (7-4) to deny the code change while the floor action was requested and confirmed the committee action to keep sprinklers in the code.
  • RB 56, was disapproved by the committee (7-4)
  • RB 57, removed by submitter
  • RB 55, disapproved (10-1) by committee [click to continue…]

Large Numbers at ICC Hearings

Large Numbers In Baltimore for Hearings

The International Code Council (ICC) is heading full steam into the 5th day of code change proposals.  Today’s hearings in Track 1 will feature IRC Building and include multiple proposals on the residential sprinkler requirements.  Track 2 completed the structural provisions of the IBC and will now move into the IECC.  The numbers estimated to be in attendance has forced a location change for the code hearings and Part II is now in the convention center to allow adequate space for the hearings in Part 1

The code development hearings will continue into the weekend up till the Annual Business Meeting and then restart next week.  The code development hearings will shape the 2012 editions of the ICC documents.

We have received lots of emails on where is the International Code Council bulletin board (forum) is.  Well to tell you the truth, its complicated.  I have found it by googling the terms ICC bulletin board but it doesn’t have the same feel as the old board.  Oh and by the way, you must be a member.

I am trying to get on top of it to help you all out but I can’t log in to ask questions.

Study: U.S. Behind World in Fire Prevention

Fire officials in the State of Guanajuato in Mexico have a belief that the best fire department isn’t the one that responds to the most calls. Rather, it’s the one that prevents the most fire.

A new “best practices” report shows virtually the entire world does a far better job at reducing fire causalities than the United States by as much as 50 percent in some cases.

The final installment of a three-year study examining how 10 nations handle fire prevention in their countries was recently released. The report, commissioned by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), was researched and written by System Planning Corporation’s TriData Division in Arlington, Va. The principal researcher was TriData’s president Philip Schaenman.

Its Fire Prevention Week 2009 and many of you are busy with department open houses, public awareness, or education events.  The National Fire Prevention Association has many resources available to you to help make the week successful.  Its important to remember that this week is not limited to fire code officials and it takes all of us to make a difference.

All inspectors play a key role in helping raise awareness on fire prevention after all thats why we have building and fire codes.  Its all about life safety

UL and Phoenix Fire Department to Host Educational Symposium, December 2-3, 2009

Is it possible to design greater fire safety measures into residential construction?  Can a colaboration between enforces, users, builders and architects lead to safer residential construction?  Can you be a part of this two day educational symposium and represent the view points of your industry to help lead change and help reduce the fire problem in the United States?

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the Phoenix Fire Department will be hosting a first of its kind Residential Fire Safety Symposium at the Arizona Grand Resort in Phoenix, Arizona on December 2nd and 3rd, 2009. The Symposium, titled “Designing Fire Safety into Residential Construction: Perspectives, Ideas, and Trends,” will be available to people concerned with residential fire safety, including the general public, through UL University registration.
