It’s Fire Prevention Week
Just in case you did not know its fire prevention week, which officially runs through this Sunday. FPW has been celebrated around the states through increased fire prevention efforts, open houses, and even proclamations.
Vision 20/20 Report Released
The culminations on many months of work since the Vision 20/20 summit has been summarized in the final report. Vision 20/20 has identified five strategic areas where we must focus to help reduced fire deaths, injuries, and damage. The full report will be the catalyst for future grant activities included focus groups to work on one of the initiatives

Water Based Fire Protection System Plan Review
The United States Fire Administration (USFA), Department of Homeland Security, is recruiting students and instructor candidates to attend pilot classes for its new six-day off-campus or State enfranchised course Water-Based Fire Protection System Plan Review. The first pilot will be offered December 7 to 12 in Champaign, Illinois. The pilot delivery is a partnership with the Illinois Fire Service Institute. Students will arrive Saturday December 6 and depart Saturday, December 13.
The course will enable students to perform a plan review to evaluate the suitability of the fire sprinkler, pump and standpipe plans and calculations in accordance with nationally recognized standards for design and installation. Course content covers fire protection standards, plan reading, water supplies, building envelope features, fire protection hydraulics mathematics, fire pumps, sprinkler systems, and standpipe systems.

Today the International Code Council continued to vote on proposals at the Final Action Hearings which will
affect the 2009 series of Building Codes. The hearings started on Wednesday and continue through Monday. The series of votes which revolve around the installation of residential sprinklers drew the largest forum of governmental members the ICC has ever seen in its history. House approves legislation to assist communities with codes
Washington, DC
The U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation that will help communities across the country adopt and administer building codes to save lives and protect property. The Community Building Code Administration Grant (CBCAG) Act, sponsored by Congressman Dennis Moore (D-Kan.), would provide awards to local governments to establish and enforce building safety and fire prevention codes. CBCAG funds would be used to recruit, hire, train and equip “First Preventers,” building and fire safety officials who prevent harm by ensuring compliance with safety codes before disasters occur. The bill now goes to the Senate.
“We are very excited that the House of Representatives passed the CBCAG Act,” said International Code Council CEO Rick Weiland. “This legislation provides desperately needed resources to many vulnerable communities that do not have the trained personnel or tools to translate safety codes into proper compliance.
