Bangkok Fire Kills 55 at New Years Eve Party

Fire Started by Fireworks brought in by Spectators or may have part of New Years Display

At least 55 people were killed when a fire ripped through a nightclub in the Thai capital Bangkok early Thursday.  The fire broke out at the Santika Club as people were celebrating New Year, a local administration official said.

Santika club is located in the city’s Ekkamai district, a popular entertainment area for locals and foreigners.  Various news reports indicate an electrical explosion may have been the cause of the fire, although it is not clear yet.

Local television stations variously reported the cause of the blaze as a firework set off because of the New Year celebrations and an electrical fault at the club.  Reuters reports that “We were all dancing and suddenly there was a big flame that came out of the front of the stage and everybody was running away,” female party goer Oh Benjamas told Reuters on the street outside the smoldering wreckage of the Santika club.

Reports also indicate that almost 130 people were injured due to the fire and stampede towards the exit.

This tragic event is to similar to the Station Night Club or Dance King Fire and reminds us all to be careful tonight.  Make sure the places we visit that we know two ways out and maybe inspections are necessary too.  Be careful!

May God Bless these victims and their families, as well as the pervious nightclub fire victims.
We never know when tragedy will strike. I believe that many people have the “It will never happen to me attitude” or simply don’t think about the dangers pertaining to fire and life safety. It is imperative that everyone is prepared and educated about the dangers of nightclub fire safety. Especially, club owners.

In case you didn’t see on the regular news, the death toll is rising due to the number of people in critical care. Sebasitan you are correct, may god bless these victims.
The club owner and operators have to start taking control of their actions. The fact that the club did not have a operating license and it is in the court system is truly another tragedy.
